Public health communications project for Health Canada, educating families on button battery safety.

  • Client/Organization: Health Canada
  • Role: Content Strategy & Development
  • Project Type: Public Health Communications, Risk Awareness

About the Project

Button batteries, commonly found in household products, pose a serious safety risk to children if swallowed. Health Canada needed a clear, informative, and action-driven communication campaign to educate parents, caregivers, and industry stakeholders on button battery risks and prevention.

I was responsible for creating all the button battery content featured on Health Canada’s official resource page (except for the lithium-ion section), ensuring that:

  • Complex safety information was simplified for public understanding
  • Messaging was aligned with government safety guidelines
  • Content was accessible, engaging, and easy to navigate

The Challenge

Why was this project important?

  • Many parents and caregivers are unaware of button battery hazards
  • Serious injuries (burns, internal damage) can occur if swallowed
  • Misinformation around battery safety exists online
  • A clear, government-backed resource was needed to drive public awareness

Primary Communication Challenges:
    – Making safety guidelines simple yet impactful

  • Encouraging preventative actions in a way that resonates with families
  • Ensuring messaging was accurate, evidence-based, and accessible

The Approach

To effectively communicate button battery safety, I developed engaging, action-oriented content that included:

🔹 Infographics & Resource Materials

  • Designed concise, shareable graphics summarizing key safety points
  • Developed checklist-style guides for easy family reference
  • Ensured content was visually engaging & accessible

Key Deliverables:
– Infographics & Educational Guides for Parents & Caregivers
– Awareness Campaign Materials

Impact & Results

Increasing Public Awareness & Safety

  • Published on Health Canada’s official website, reaching hundreds of thousands of Canadian families
